Life would be very different without the YMCA from my perspective. I have been to many YMCA camps in my life, I workout there, and I work there so I feel my views are very accurate in terms of how the YMCA affects community. It brings several communities together especially in less affluent neighborhoods because it helps keep students active. The YMCA offers a economically-friendly athletic environment for everyone, and without it people would have to spend a lot more money to be a part of something like this. In some communities the YMCA is what brings them together. The Y provides affordable activities in fitness, after school programs, and camps. Without the YMCa, it would be difficult for people to find a place that provides all of the same benefits for that price.

I want to tell a story of one of my awkward experiences at my internship with the YMCA. This was very recent as it was my first week(last week). One of the first jobs that I was asked to do was tie together a lacrosse net for the lacrosse camp. It is a tedious task, but it is not necessarily difficult. All four of the sports staff members participated in this task, and three of us did it correctly. I was the odd man out as I could not figure out how to string the lacrosse net. I repeatedly strung it incorrectly, in fact, Josh told me I strung it like a lacrosse stick which is odd because I did not know I could do that. As everyone finished with their respective goals, mine was still undone, and it was mildly embarassing. I never completed the task, but Josh eventually did it, and I continued on as if it never happened. I thought this was a funny experience because it was one of the first
Last week I began my first week of work at the YMCA. It is very different to Athletic Republic as AR is a for profit industry while the Y is a non-profit industry. It seemed to me that the vibe at the YMCA was more like a family. The staff was very close with each other, and I felt very accepted into their workplace. My work so far has included assisting with sports' camps, and doing a lot in the gym. The schedule is usually consistent so I am trying to adjust to that as well. I am excited about my future work at the Y. |
